The Waimangō Urupā
The Waimangō urupā is the family cemetery where many of our family are buried. They include the following:

Here is an extract from the Journal of the Polynesian Society noting the 1941 passing of Tukumana Te Taniwha at his ancestral home 'Waimangu' (Waimangō).
Others buried in the urupā include the following:

a baby of the Ashby family. The Ashbys lived at Waimangō for a period before moving to Tāpapakanga. (Explained to us by Barry Ashby at the tangi for Wiremu Taurau (Bill) Royal, held at Waimangō, 2013.)

twin babies of Haunui and Meri who died in infancy
According to notes found in the papers of Tukumana Te Taniwha, Hineahi Te Paenga, wife of Te Paenga Reihana, was also buried in the Waimangō urupā (this was later confirmed by Hori Kerei (Caud) Royal). Hineahi died in 1933 at 20 years of age. Here is a note extracted from the papers of Tukumana Te Taniwha.
Whakamaharatanga tenei mo hine Ahi
te Paenga i hemo ki
Waimango i te ata ote Taite 18 o nga ra
O Hanuere i te tau 1933. Ona tau ite ma-
tenga 20 a i whanau ki Waimango
i te 5 o nga ra O Hurae te tau

This is a memorial to Hineahi Te Paenga
Who passed away at Waimangō on Thursday morning
the 18th of January 1933. She was twenty years of age
when she passed away. She was born at Waimangō
on the 5th of July 1913... She was born her name was?
She was born at the spring where Pero was also born.
Another note appears in Tukumana's papers as follows:

Hineahi, mother of Hine the daughter
passed away at Waimangō on Thursday morning
18 of January 1933. She was twenty years of age when she died.
She born in the Waimangō stream on the 8th of July 1913
'Pero' referred to in the text is Margaret Pero Thompson. She married Tauwhare Thompson of Ngāti Pāoa and lived for many years in their house at the rear of the marae in Whakatīwai. Aunty Pero is buried in the main urupā at the beach in Whakatīwai.
